IGT Slots: a look behind the company

Regarded as one of the largest providers of both land-based slot machines and online slots. International Game Technology, or IGT, is undoubtedly among the most experienced companies in the gambling industry

The company is currently headquartered in the United Kingdom, with operating offices in Rome, Italy, Las Vegas, Nevada, and Providence, Rhode Island, with almost 11,000 employees across the world.

Developing casino games since the 1970s, the company even predates the emergence of online casinos, having begun its operations as a provider of physical slot machines. IGT became known for pushing the envelope in the industry, having been responsible for several innovations, such as computerized player tracking for bonus programs, linked progressive jackpots, and also for its many branded games.

As one of the pioneers in the gambling industry, IGT has published a huge portfolio of casino games, including popular slots like Cleopatra, DaVinci Diamonds, Kitty Glitter, and even branded slots such as Ghostbusters Plus and Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Online gambling is also the focus of IGT, and even before the establishment of IGT Interactive – the company’s online gambling branch – their limited virtual game presence generated more than $13 billion annually. Today, IGT games are featured in over 300 casino websites on the Internet.

Since the emergence of mobile gaming, IGT has also been pushing for mobile-friendly platforms and mobile responsiveness. Most of their newer games are designed mobile-first and can be played in a variety of mobile devices with both iOS and Android operating systems.

In this article, we’re going to take a brief look at IGT’s history, the licenses currently held by the company, and some of their most popular games. A Brief History

International Game Technology was founded in 1975, as A-1 Supply, by a pioneer in the casino industry, William “Si” Redd, who would become known as the “king of slot machines”.

After working for years as distributor, and later founding a subsidiary of Bally Manufacturing, one of the oldest companies in the gambling industry, Redd went on to acquire the rights to video poker and established his own company. In 1978, he changed the name of the company to SIRCOMA (Si Redd Coin Machines), and three years later, he finally settled on International Game Technology.

Over the course of almost 50 years, IGT has released ground-breaking products and slot games that have stood the test of time. Megabucks, the company’s millionaire-making game, first appeared on Las Vegas casino floors in 1978, and Wheel of Fortune, one of the most popular slot games of all time, was released in 1996.

IGT also acquired several established gambling providers over the years, including WagerWorks, which was acquired in 2005, and Double Down Interactive, acquired in 2012. Finally, in 2014, Italian gaming equipment company Gtech purchased IGT for a reported $6.4 million, establishing a new holding company based in the United Kingdom under the name International Game Technology PLC.

Licenses

Regarding its licenses and regulation, IGT, as one of the leading companies in the iGaming industry, holds more than 450 global gaming licenses, governed by state, provincial, national, tribal and other governmental gaming agencies.

IGT holds licenses from two of the most recognized gambling agencies in the world, the United Kingdom Gambling Commission and the Malta Gaming Authority, which certifies and guarantees their games are safe, fair, and unpredictable.

IGT provides a wide variety of slot machines and online slot games, including several progressive jackpots like MegaJackpots, branded titles like Ghostbusters Plus and HBO’s Sex in the City, and even slots based on game shows, such as Deal or No Deal, Jeopardy, and, of course, Wheel of Fortune, the world’s most played slot.

The company is also the leading manufacturer of video poker games, which combines the thrill and excitement of slots with the strategic thinking of poker. IGT video poker games include Jacks or Better and Deuces Wild, two of the most popular video poker games in the world, and recently-released titles like Lucky Quads and Extreme Poker.

Finally, IGT has also recently ventured into online table games, providing a wide variety of classic casino games like blackjack, roulette, and baccarat, while also pushing for technological advancements to come up with high quality, exciting gaming experiences with an authentic casino feeling.
